To ensure accurate student attendance and reduce dropouts, the Tamil Nadu government has implemented a smart biometric attendance system across 500 public schools in Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai. These devices are synced with a central database and scan students’ fingerprints or RFID cards upon entry. Parents receive real-time SMS alerts when their children enter and leave school. The system has reduced false attendance reports and improved punctuality. School authorities say it has streamlined daily reporting and enabled early intervention for absenteeism. With a successful three-month trial, the state plans to scale this solution to all government schools by 2026, promoting transparency and student accountability.
