Uttar Pradesh Begins River Dolphin Census Using Underwater Acoustics

The Uttar Pradesh Forest and Wildlife Department has initiated a state-wide census of the endangered Gangetic River Dolphin using underwater acoustic sensors for the first time. Installed along the Ganga, Yamuna, and Ghaghara rivers, the sensors capture dolphin echolocation clicks, allowing researchers to estimate populations with greater accuracy and less intrusion. The project, in collaboration with Indian Institute of Science (IISc) researchers, replaces earlier visual spotting methods which often undercounted dolphins due to turbidity and river depth. Preliminary results from Varanasi and Prayagraj indicate stable numbers but highlight habitat degradation in downstream regions. The study also identifies high-risk zones due to fishing net entanglement and water pollution. Public outreach campaigns are being conducted in nearby villages to educate boatmen and fishermen about dolphin-safe practices. The government has declared its intention to publish a dolphin action plan based on the final census report by early next year.
