West Bengal Starts Heritage Tram Museum and Cafe in Kolkata

To preserve the legacy of India’s oldest tram system, the West Bengal Transport Department has inaugurated a heritage tram museum and café inside a refurbished vintage tram at Esplanade in Kolkata. The tram, operational from 1902, has been converted into a walk-through museum detailing the city’s transportation evolution with archival photos, tickets, uniforms, and historical tram parts. The attached café serves traditional Bengali snacks and tea, attracting both tourists and daily commuters. The initiative aims to revive public interest in trams as a sustainable mode of transport while preserving their cultural importance. On weekends, the museum tram offers a slow heritage ride across College Street and the Maidan, accompanied by a live guide narrating historical anecdotes. The project has seen high footfall since launch and is expected to spark similar ventures in other cities with heritage public transport systems.
